A recent EPA mandate to reduce the production of R-22 Freon that is used in air conditioning units made before 2010, has taken many Norfolk Virginia home owners by surprise and most are still unaware of the change and upcoming price increases.
The changes we see today, stem from the Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer that began in 1987. The main culprit is R-22 Freon, which is used in an estimated 80% of residential air conditioning systems.
